'Education for a better world' - The International Baccalaureate
The International Baccalaureate (IB) programme is a worldwide educational system. There are three different programmes offered to schools; the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). For the purpose of this compendium, I will be focusing on the Primary Years Programme.
The IB PYP focuses on the education for students aged 3-12 years. It concentrates on the students as a whole child, both in and outside of the classroom, striving to accommodate for the requirements needed for most global curriculums.
The six-transdisplinary themes are the unique elements of the IB Primary Years Programme, which aims to ‘incorporate local and global issues into the curriculum and effectively allow students to “step up” beyond the confines of learning within subject area’ (International Baccalaureate Organisation 2012).
The underpinning values that inform the assessment policy are presented through the learner profile. ‘The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognising their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world’ (International Baccalaureate Organisation 2013)
