The Montessori Method
'I did not invent a method of education, I simply gave some little children a chance to live” - Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori created the Montessori approach to provide an open-minded method to education as an “aid to life”. This focuses on the supporting the growth of the student from childhood to maturity.
The students are given the opportunities to engage in spontaneous, prepared and planned activities with the assistance of trained educators within flexible multi-aged learning environment. Within this structure the children are encouraged to progress at their own pace, depending on their specific abilities. Within the Montessori method, there are four stages or planes of development that children experience from birth to adulthood. (Montessori Australia n.a(c)) |
The aim is to see other children’s achievements as non-threatening but rather to inspire the children to aspire towards. There is an understanding that some individuals achieve success in different area and in different ways, but rather than feeling discourages to support from students allows the children to continue to tackle the task at hand.
